Lesson 6: What is Dedicated Hosting?

Last Update: September 19, 2013

In Lesson 5, we spoke about VPS hosting. We mentioned that VPS hosting is the bridge between Shared Hosting and Dedicated Hosting. So now is the time to answer the question: What is Dedicated Hosting?

What is Dedicated Hosting?

If Shared Hosting is likened to one apartment in a building, VPS hosting is likened to one townhouse in a townhouse complex, then Dedicated Hosting can be likened to a whole house.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting means that one of a web host’s servers is completely dedicated to you. It means you’re renting the whole server; there is nothing to share with others.

Dedicated hosting has a wealth of benefits versus shared hosting. For one, it gives you more flexibility regarding the particular server you select. You get custom options like operating system, hardware, installed software, control panel, and so on.

But do you really need all this? Can you afford it?

The main disadvantage of dedicated hosting is that it does cost a lot more. Also, just like houses vary in size and shape, so do web servers. So be ready to pay more for a dedicated server with the better CPU, more RAM, more disk space, etc.

For example, 1and1 are Dedicated Hosting experts and their servers range from $79.99 to 799.99/month depending whether you want an ordinary house or a mansion =).

Going back to the question:

Do You Really Need It?

If you are or will be running a high-volume online shop, a very high-bandwidth site with a lot of videos that you don’t want to host on YouTube (Vimeo or a similar site), a site with large file downloads and uploads, a gaming site, large forum site, then Dedicated Hosting is probably your only option.

Once again, a reliable shared hosting plan can meet needs and requirements of around 99% of all websites in the world.
